Cavern and Cave Classes

Open enrollment schedule below—private classes available, please inquire.

Cavern Diver

Cavern diving is a natural extension of open-water diving. A cavern diving course is designed to introduce the open-water diver to the techniques developed for safe exploration of that portion of a cave illuminated by natural daylight with the minimum amount of specialized equipment and training. Cavern diver training benefits the diver by developing critical skills such as buoyancy control, air management and dive planning. Splash offers the PADI Cavern Certification complimented by the NACD and TDI program with specialty instructor training available.

The Cavern Course is generally taught on Florida Springs Trips. Contact Ron Carmichael (ron@splashdivecenter.com) for questions and detailed schedules.

Splash teaches a cavern course which is a combination of the requirements laid out by PADI, TDI and the NACD.

Intro to Cave

Cave Diving Sign

Splash teaches NACD Introduction to Cave Diving on most Florida Springs trips immediately following the Cavern Diver course. Students may sign up for both classes over the same trip if they wish.

NACD Apprentice Cave Diver

This course is designed to prepare Intro to Cave divers for Full Cave. Some topics covered:

  • Diving with doubles
  • Use of jump and gap reels/spools
  • Decompression techniques

An Apprentice certification by itself allows a diver to dive with doubles to 1/6th of their starting pressure before turning, make simple jumps, and execute minor planned decompression dives. The certification expires one year after being issued.

The course takes two days to complete by itself. It is usually combined with Full Cave to create a four-day course.

This course is the fourth in the series of cave diver training. Advanced cave dive planning, the practical execution dives in different types of cave systems and scenarios divers encounter are presented. This course typically takes a week (when combined with Apprentice) and requires 8–9 dives.

Students who feel they are ready to take Full Cave should contact ron@splashdivecenter.com to arrange a training plan. Most classes are conducted in North Florida with classes limited to 3 people. Instructors vary depending upon availability and student preferences.
