The U.S.S. Monitor, from 1862 to 2007: Mel and Ron Dive the Monitor and Live to Tell the Story

The U.S.S. Monitor changed the tide of the Civil War, and changed the way that warships are built. It sank in 1862 off the Outer Banks, was discovered in 1973 and became a protected National Marine Sanctuary in 1975. The Navy recovered major pieces (the turret, the propeller, the main engine) during 1998-2002, now on display in Newport News. Recent civilian diving expeditions have taken place 2005-2007, with marine archaeological permits from NOAA. Mel Briscoe and Ron Carmichael joined the 2007 expedition, using 17/50 trimix to 230 feet. They will tell the story at Splash at 7pm, June 2. Come share refreshments and the excitement, and see never-before-shown pictures.

All of us here at Splash Dive Center, Inc. are saddened by the death of Susie Caskey. With great personal sorrow, her friends and former coworkers share the loss and extend our heartfelt sympathy to her family. We have lost a good friend and community leader. Susie managed the Herndon store for 2 years and worked for Splash for over 5 years. She loved leading Florida dive trips and was a PADI Divemaster.

Susan Connare Caskey, age 37 of Burke, Virginia died on Monday, December 31, 2007 at Inova Fairfax Hospital. She had lived in the Northern Virginia area for the past 15 years and grew up in Pittsburgh, Pa. She was of the Roman Catholic Faith. She was a Sworn Animal Control Officer and promoted to Chief Animal Control Officer in 2006 for the City of Manassas Police Department. She was a member of Virginia Animal Control League Club; Manassas City Scuba Team; Fraternal Order of Police and a Board Member of Prince William County S.P.C.A.. In lieu of flowers the family suggest donations be made to City of Manassas Animal Adoption Center 10039 Dean Drive, Manassas, Va. 20110 in memory of Susan Caskey.
