Service FAQ

Why does SCUBA equipment have to be serviced every year?

  • Corrosion from salt water and chlorine, as well as impurities from fresh water can build up and deteriorate the metal parts.
  • Every dive, the O-rings and seats are exposed to high pressures which cause them to wear out over time.
  • Other parts like hoses wear out after several years (sometimes unpredictably) and require regular inspection to ensure they are in good condition.
  • Regulators are sensitive, life support equipment. A failure of any part can cause total failure of the regulator. If this happens underwater…

What happens to my regulators during an annual service?

When we service your regulators, we completely disassemble them, remove all O-rings, and clean each metal part in an acid to remove any corrosion which has accumulated. If any parts have been damaged or worn out, we replace them. We also replace any parts which are included in the manufacturer's annual service parts kit (diaphragms, air filters, plastic washers, etc.) Most O-rings will also be replaced except in a few circumstances.

Once everything has been cleaned and checked out, the parts are lubricated and your regulator is reassembled and tuned for optimal performance.

Why do I need annual service on my gear if I only use it 1–2 times a year?

Salt water and fresh water can become trapped in little places which may cause corrosion. Also, read the answer to the next question.

My regulator has not been used in 5 years, does it need service?

Yes! The O-rings simply deteriorate over time and dry out. A simple assessment may suffice, but is it worth risking your life over? A full servicing is your best option.

How long does it take to have my equipment serviced?

Time estimates are given on our service page for each type of service. When you bring in your equipment we will be able to give you a more accurate time frame. Feel free to let us know how soon you will need your equipment back—depending on workload, we may be able to beat our estimates by a few days at no charge. Splash is also happy to accomodate rush requests, but for an additional fee.
